I attended the 2011 Dubai International Film Festival and it was fantastic. It was a complete new experience for me, so my head was buzzing and full of excitement. At the time I had been so intrigued in filming and its industry, how this works and how that works so it was a great opportunity for me to bask in.
I went with a group of film study students who were intending on watching the movie ‘The Company Men’ and attending the interviews with Colin Firth and Sean Penn. I really wanted to go the year before, because Gerard Butler had come to the U.A.E and what a better way to go see the man who acted in such daring and appealing movies like ‘300’ and ‘P.S. I love you’ [well in my opinion], but unfortunately I did not go, but for some reason I was as glad to have attended this one.
We ended up attending only one interview, which was with Colin Firth, because Sean Penn had to pull out and contribute to his humanitarian services in Haiti where he was most needed. Colin Firth was amazing though. He really had me at the edge of my seat. I was so appealed in what he had to say. Firstly, he talked about his childhood and how he knew he wanted to act at such an early age, for chemistry and physics did not do him justice. Next, he discussed how he got in to the movie industry and how he was inspired by many people and things like art. Then, he talked about the roles he had played several years ago such as Mr. Darcy in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and his not too recent role as King George VI in ‘The Kings Speech’. Lastly, he gave advice to people in the audience as to what to do in order to succeed in the filming industry and basically said to stay intrigued, not only by movies and films but by other things like the nature in people. The way the act, react and do things. Art, try to use your imagination in such a way that it becomes infinite. Just use the most simple things as inspiration.
His words have applied to how I carry out my work sometimes. Especially when I am trying to think of new and interesting ideas for video projects. Why not? Sometimes I step out of my shell and do something completely different. But just as long as I am happy and am more than satisfied with the output of my work then I am happy.
Attending the Film Festival was such a great opportunity. It has also made me realise that there is so much more out there. So much more to do and so much to be inspired by. For me it will all start with that record button and some passion.
